The Year of ... The Orange Tree

Chinese New Year has been the backdrop to Art lessons this term, with some wonderful results. The art room has a display of colourful and wriggly dragons and - I have to say, terribly sweet - little oxen. It is also garlanded with paper flowers; these displays are as nothing however, to the unassuming little bush in our garden, which has been transformed into a Wishing Tree. The original Wishing Tree is in Hong Kong and Chinese people have traditionally travelled to it during the New Year festivities. Deciding that Hong Kong was too far, the girls found a tree that was a little closer to home and, having tied their wishes to an orange, threw these offerings up into the branches. Legend has it that the wishes that stick will come true.
